Cuban Revolutionary, Fidel Castro Dies at 90

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz , Cuban politician and revolutionary who governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008 died on friday. The fiery apostle of revolution is well known for bringing the Cold War to the Western Hemisphere in 1959 and then defied the United States for nearly half a century as Cuba’s maximum leader, bedeviling 11 American presidents and briefly pushing the world to the brink of nuclear war.

Castro fell ill and was hospitalized with diverticulitis in the summer of 2006, giving up most of his powers for the first time to his brother Raul Castro. Mr. Castro was perhaps the most important leader to emerge from Latin America since the wars of independence in the early 19th century. He was decidedly the most influential shaper of Cuban history.
